Congratulations to the 2013 HFES-STTG Best Student Paper Award Winner - Mahtab Ghazizadeh

STTG member Mahtab Ghazizadeh won the 2013 Best Student Paper Award with the paper titled "Text Readability and Drivers' Reading Time: Insights from the Visual Occlusion Method." She won this award from 5 top student papers. This paper is co-authored by Vindhya Venkatraman, Miralis Torres, Madeleine C. Gibson, John D. Lee, and Linda Ng Boyle.

Mahtab is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


Text Readability and Drivers' Reading Time: Insights from the Visual Occlusion Method

Abstract
Internet access, vehicle diagnostics, and real-time communication are becoming increasingly common in all vehicles and the complexity of the information displayed is a major concern. Current guidelines focus on the number of characters in a text message, but other measures of text readability might be more sensitive. This study examined how well different metrics of text readability predict the time it takes a driver to read a message on an in-vehicle display. Participants completed reading tasks while seated in the driver’s seat of a driving simulator. Occlusion goggles were used to mimic the timesharing between the driving task and the secondary reading tasks, according to the ISO 16673 (2007) guidelines. The results showed that message length (number of characters) predicts the total time spent on the task (Total Shutter Open Time [TSOT]) and that the combination of number of words in the message and Shannon entropy of the message predicts TSOT only as well as number of characters alone. Applying the model human processor calculations of reading rates (Card, Moran, & Newell, 1983) showed that participants likely read the messages word-byword in successive saccades, instead of letter-by-letter or phrase-by-phrase. Findings provide direction for more in-depth lexical analyses of text readability related to in-vehicle displays.

STTG Election

It’s STTG election time! Since we are halfway through our two year term for the TG Chair (Greg Fitch) and Newsletter Editor (Nick Gkikas), we are looking for one or more nominees for each of the following positions:

·         Program Chair Elect (1 year as Elect + 1 year as Program Chair)
·         Webmaster (1 year term)

Positions become effective at the close of the 2013 TG business meeting. You may nominate yourself or a colleague. If you nominate someone else, please check to be sure that the person is willing to run. Following HFES rules, nominees for the Program Chair Elect position must be Full Members of HFES and members of the TG. The Webmaster position can be filled by any HFES member provided they are members of the TG.

Please reply to Greg Fitch (gfitch@vtti.vt.edu) with nominations by August 26th, 2013. Election ballots will be emailed shortly after the close of the nomination cycle.

Program Chair Elect: Understudy and assistant to the 2013-2014 program chair (Anuj Kumar Pradhan). The Program Chair Elect becomes the Program Chair for the 2015 annual conference (in LA). The Program Chair is responsible for overseeing the technical review of proposals submitted for the HFES Annual Meeting.

Internship: Aviation Human Factors Engineering at the FAA in New Jersey

Spectrum Software Technology (SST) and our partner Behavioral Science Associates (BSA) provide usability and Human Factors (HF) engineering design, and research and software development expertise, to Federal aviation and defense agencies, and to private industry.
 

We currently have a unique paid opportunity for a summer intern interested in human factors and usability engineering in aviation and air traffic management. This position is located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center of the FAA near Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Tech Center is one of the nation’s premier aviation research and development institutions, and its Human Factors researchers conduct high-caliber, globally recognized work. We combine research and reality with opportunities to publish in top HF journals and conference proceedings, while applying our results in the near term, in the real operational environment.
 

You will be responsible for a variety of Human Factors engineering functions under direct supervision, and apply knowledge of human capabilities and limitations to the design, development, implementation, and acquisition of processes, concepts, systems, and work environments with the aim of improving the performance, usability, and safety of the National Airspace System.
 

Internship tasks may include the following: literature reviews; computer human interface (CHI) analyses; requirements definition and evaluation; cognitive walkthroughs; heuristic evaluations; usability evaluations, human performance studies; measurement of situation awareness, workload and performance; human-in-the-loop studies using high fidelity operational simulations; ergonomic evaluations; and kinematics research.
 

This internship requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Psychology or Engineering, or other field, with relevant HF-related coursework. Candidate should ideally be working toward an advanced degree in HF or a related field. This is an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in applying human factors and usability principles to help evolve the safety and efficiency of air transportation. Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Driving Safety Research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) seeks a post-doctoral research associate in driving safety research. This is a full-time, benefited position with funding for an initial period of one year. Pending satisfactory performance, the position is typically extended to two years. The primary goal of the program is to develop the research careers of recent doctoral graduates with a focus on driving safety research, through a program that encourages creativity and independent discovery in collaboration between two research institutions with extensive records of accomplishment in these fields.

The post-doctoral research associate will conduct driving safety research in close collaboration with research scientists at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (LMRIS) in Hopkinton, MA as well as with faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass). Duties will include conducting original research, publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, participating in seminars and work groups, and collaborating on research grant applications. The post-doctoral research associate will spend roughly equal amounts of time in residence at each institution.

The successful applicant will have a doctoral degree in industrial engineering, psychology, or a related field. The candidate will have less than five years’ post-doctorate experience, a demonstrated record of individual initiative and originality in research, strong analytic skills, and the potential to become an independent academic researcher within two to three years. Experience with the use of driving simulators, instrumented vehicles, and eye trackers to study human behavior are desirable. Access to such equipment is available at both institutions. Preference will be given to applicants whose training, skills and research interests match the research interests of mentors at LMRIS and UMass.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position at the University of Toronto

The Human Factors and Applied Statistics (HFast) Lab at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral fellowship, with a preferred start date of August 1, 2013. The postdoctoral fellow will work on an industry-funded human factors project which focuses on designing effective feedback for drivers to induce safer driving behaviors. The salary is competitive, and the appointment may be extended to 24 months.


Required Qualifications

- PhD in Industrial Engineering, Experimental Psychology, or a field related to Human Factors
- Demonstrated record of research ability including journal publications and conference presentations
