Aviation Human Factors Researcher/Engineer, FAA Technical Center
Spectrum Software Technology (SST) and our partner Behavioral Science Associates (BSA) provide Usability and Human Factors Engineering design, and research and software development expertise, to Federal aviation and defense agencies, and to private industry.
We currently have an opportunity for a Human Factors Engineering professional, starting immediately. This position is located at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center near Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Tech Center is one of the nation’s premier aviation research and development institutions, and its Human Factors researchers conduct high-caliber, globally recognized work using state-of-the-art human-in-the-loop simulators, physiological data recording equipment, and other advanced research tools. We combine research and reality, with opportunities to publish in top HF journals and conference proceedings, while applying our results in the near term, in the real operational environment. The incumbent must have a Human Factors-oriented degree in Psychology, Engineering, or other suitable domain. The minimum requirement is a Master’s degree plus 5 years of experience, or a PhD plus 3 years of experience. FAA or other aviation research and development experience is preferred.
The incumbent will employ high-fidelity and part-task Air Traffic Management and cockpit simulations to design, conduct and manage human performance studies, conduct usability design research, and supply recommendations that will help evolve the next generation of aviation concepts, tools and procedures for the National Airspace System.

General Job Tasks:
- Conduct literature reviews
- Analyze and prioritize research questions; develop research studies, analytic methods, study goals, and objectives
- Develop detailed test plans
- Create scenarios and concepts for use in research studies
- Develop and refine experimental methods, techniques and procedures
- Create and maintain schedules for research deliverables
- Perform data collection and analysis of research results; produce quick looks, briefings, and final reports
- Work with end-users to define operational impacts, and provide human factors and usability design recommendations
- Review vendor products and designs and provide usability recommendations based on human factors standards, guidelines and best practices.
