Position Description:

We are searching for an individual to be part of a team conducting human factors highway safety research.  Research generally lies within the areas of safety and operations such as: intersections, roadways, pedestrians/bicyclists, visibility, traffic control devices, weather, work zones, and ITS/connected vehicles.

The position is located at the FHWA Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Virginia. Access to facilities such as a field research vehicle, sign testing lab, and driving simulators is provided in order to best suit research needs. An ideal candidate is able to design, plan, execute and report on research studies.  Opportunities are available for publishing and presenting leading edge research results.

Qualifications:

Candidates with an advanced degree (PhD or Masters + experience) in experimental psychology, human factors, or equivalent field is required. Applied graduate studies work may be applied as experience. This position is ideal for a recent PhD graduate.

Demonstrated skill and experience in:
  • Ability to serve as a principal investigator and lead research studies.
  • Managing subordinate technical personnel in a multi-disciplined environment,
  • Designing and conducting applied behavioral research studies,
  • Designing data collection procedures and assuring quality control in data collection,
  • Performing statistical analyses and interpreting the results,
  • Preparing research reports and summaries of research activities,
  • Reviewing and evaluating complex research studies or programs,
  • Performing thorough literature reviews and summarizing technical information,
  • Communicating technical information to audiences with diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience and expertise specific to the surface transportation field including highway safety and operations, visual perception, and automation are a plus.
